Blog Recommendation Monday: DigginFood

The DigginFood blog describes itself as "...a community table that serves up gardening and cooking inspiration for people who like good food."

Here is a quote about the blog from its author Willi Galloway,

I got the idea for DigginFood while I was harvesting some greens. I was thinking about what I was going to make for dinner and I realized that I read tons of gardening and cooking blogs, but none of them focus on my favorite thing to do: cooking with food fresh from the garden. So I decided to create a site where I could blog about what was happening in my garden and kitchen, share growing guides and recipes for my favorite foods, and tell stories about other people who like to grow and eat real food.
Sounds like it is right up our alley, doesn't it? We think you will like it too!

Here is a sample of the wide variety of content you will find:

Convert an IKEA Shelf into a DIY Seed Starting Station (No need to explain this!)
Inoculating Peas with Rhizobia Bacteria (Sounds scary, but is a good idea!)
Vegetable Trellis Round Up (Trellis options for all kinds of veggies.)

Apple Tree Trellis--SPRING UPDATE!

Last August we blogged about our Fuji apple tree trellis. Incorporating trellis systems into your edible garden is a great way to grow fruit trees with limited space. (You'll find some great resources in the previously mentioned blog entry.)

Despite the wonderful trellis and quality tree, last year's Fuji apple crop was a little disappointing. (We got one apple!) But as you experienced gardeners know, these things take time! Our fruit trees, after having a year a half in the ground are looking happier than ever and pushing out the blooms to prove it.

Below are some photos of what our apple tree looked like a couple days ago! Our crack team of gardeners continues to train the tree to the trellis. Doesn't it look great and look at all those blossoms! This harvest season we'll be able to look back at our one apple season with a chuckle!

Apple Tree Trellis

It is possible to have an orchard of fruit trees in your backyard if you keep the trees small. At the UC Davis Good Life Garden we trained a Fuji apple tree to grow on a trellis. See the photo to the left.

Here is a how-to link with information on developing your own trellis support system for apple trees.

Our fruit tree was donated by a local nursery, Dave Wilson Nursery. Check out their website for a veritable plethora of information for home gardeners interested in growing backyard orchards.
